The “Big Three” Credit Reporting Agencies

When you are inquiring about your credit score or have decided that you need to fix your credit score there are three major credit agencies that you should be contacting. Each of them is important in their own right and various banks and lending institutions will use at least one of the major three. Each one of them may have different information on your file and so it is important that you get a free copy of your credit report from them each year. A good idea is to is to spread them out throughout the year so that every four months you get a free credit report. Company 1 in January, Company 2 in May and Company 3 in September. This way you will always have your latest credit report for free and can compare the reports from all three agencies and anything that is adversely effecting your credit score can be remedied immediately.

Quite often something can be on your credit report and it has no business being there. It could be information relating to another person of the same or similar name or it could be just a simple error by a staff member in the reporting agency. You are allowed the free annual copy of your report so that, should an error occur, you can become aware of it and contact the people responsible to have your previous good credit score restored. Just contact the credit agencies by mail, telephone or over the internet and they will happily take care of any mistakes effecting your credit report.
